SUMMARY:Cultural District Gallery Crawl
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Cultural District Gallery Crawl\, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center invites you to explore three powerful exhibitions that celebrate storytelling\, imagination\, and local talent. Join us for an evening of discovery as art fills the building and conversations unfold across our galleries. \nPeju Alatise: I Will Belong to Only Me anchors the experience as the first U.S. solo survey of the acclaimed Nigerian artist\, bringing together two decades of work across sculpture\, installation\, film\, and text that center African girlhood\, imagination\, and self-definition. Also on view is Lavett Ballard: a Rose is a Rose is a Rose\, a poetic collection of mixed-media assemblages exploring Black femininity\, materiality\, and memory through reclaimed materials and layered historical imagery. Completing the evening is Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh\, a regional\, juried exhibition that brings together visual art\, writing\, performance\, video\, and interdisciplinary practices to examine whose stories are preserved\, shared\, and elevated\, and how storytelling can serve as a catalyst for justice\, memory\, and collective action. \nWhether you are continuing your gallery crawl or making AWAACC your first stop\, this evening offers an opportunity to engage with art that invites reflection\, dialogue\, and new ways of seeing. \n\nA production of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust\, the Gallery Crawl is a free\, multi-venue “open house” showcasing Pittsburgh’s dynamic art and entertainment scene. Presented in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District\, the Gallery Crawl attracts thousands of art lovers to experience visual arts\, live music\, dance\, spoken word and more. \nExperience the vibrancy and energy of the Gallery Crawl – the liveliest night in the city.

DESCRIPTION:Join the TRUTHSayers Speaker Series for an unforgettable evening with Pittsburgh’s own New York Times Best Selling Author\, Nia Sioux. After the event\, attendees will have a chance to meet Sioux at a book signing\, with books available for purchase. \nThis TRUTHSayers Speaker Series is an ongoing program bringing today’s preeminent speakers and artists to the Center to reflect on current events and share unique and thought-provoking material in hopes of inspiring racial awareness and understanding between people. \nAbout Nia Sioux\nEntertaining the world since she was 9 years old\, Nia Sioux is continuing to grow and evolve as a performer\, singer\, actress\, author\, entrepreneur\, and social justice advocate (she regularly worked with The White House on various campaigns). With over 15 million followers and many facets of the entertainment industry already under her belt\, Nia is truly a multi-hyphenate talent that is up for any challenge. With an already established and impressive resume\, Nia’s most recent projects include starring in the Lifetime original movie\, ‘Imperfect High’\, as well as her critically acclaimed original Facebook Watch series\, ‘Dance With Nia’\, which she executive produced. She teamed up with AdCouncil to bring further awareness to being vulnerable and open in discussing mental health with friends. The campaign titled ‘Capture the Convo’ sits down with her friends GAYLE\, Zach Hood\, Brooklinn Khoury\, Paul Russell and Kenzie Ziegler\, to speak on their own mental wellness and encourages audiences to do the same with their friends. Now\, Sioux can be seen furthering her voice in the short film\, The Power of Z\, where the advocate narrates the important story of Gen Z and the need for their nearly 41 million votes at the polls during the 2024 Presidential Election. \nFor her 2025 memoir\, Bottom of the Pyramid\, Nia became an immediate New York Times Bestselling Author\, with placements on traditional and audiobook lists. In 2021\, Nia released her first children’s book\, “Today I Dance”. Nia believes in the importance of being a positive role model and encourages kids to “star” in their own lives\, which is a message that is very dear to her. Because she is passionate about using her platform to highlight positivity in the world\, Nia started a weekly #RoleModelMonday tribute on her social media to support and recognize people who are making a difference. \nOn top of everything else she has going on\, Nia recently graduated from UCLA where she was a member of the all-Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. Nia continues to break the mold\, letting her passions guide every journey of creative expression that she embarks on. Whether that be her entrepreneurial endeavors\, her music\, or her social justice work\, Nia always brings 100% of herself to her projects. She is also passionate about raising awareness for reflex neurovascular dystrophy (RND)\, anti-bullying\, body positivity\, and animal rights. \nNia has previously worked with brands such as Aerie\, Facebook Watch\, Marc Jacobs Perfume\, Doritos\, Reebok\, 2018 Winter Olympics as an NBC/Musical.ly Correspondent\, ABC/Disney\, Victoria’s Secret\, TooFaced\, Sephora\, Home Depot\, Capital One\, HP\, Charlotte Tilbury\, EOS\, Instagram\, Spotify\, Book of the Month\, Califia Farms\, Starbucks\, Clinique and more. \nIn her free time\, Nia loves watching the Steelers\, going to a Broadway show\, or reading a new book.
