Cultural District Gallery Crawl: Cadence Workshop

Join us during the July 25th Cultural District Gallery Crawl for an exciting evening of art, community, and fun at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in collaboration with Audacity and Humane Action Pennsylvania. This event promises to be an immersive experience celebrating creativity and culture. Explore live painting sessions inspired by the renowned sculptor John Rhoden, where local artists will bring their interpretations to life right before your eyes. Participate in the Cadence Collection tote-making workshop and take home a unique piece of art that you created. Enjoy the sounds of our DJ, who will keep the atmosphere lively, while enjoying delicious bites throughout the night. Check out multiple visual artists creating art in real time, with inspiration from sculptor, John Rhoden. Guests are invited to observe, interact, and learn from the processes.
6:30 PM – 8:00 PM: Cadence Collage Workshop: Tote Bag Making
Join us for the Cadence Collage workshop, where you’ll have the opportunity to create your very own unique tote bag masterpiece. Explore the beauty of combining rhythms, patterns, and textures to design a one-of-a-kind accessory that reflects your style and creativity. Unleash your imagination and bring your vision to life in this hands-on workshop experience.

Join us as each visual artist shares insights about their live work and connection to Rhoden’s legacy. We encourage you to participate in our Q&A.

Bios

Cat Burton is a curator, and producer at the confluence of media, fashion, and art-focused experiences. Across the portfolio of her work, Cat’s vocational gravitas has shown her ability to execute all facets of production. In 2019, Cat accepted a role at August Wilson Center as Facilities Manager. Concurrently, Cat curated exhibitions at Social Status, Glitterbox Theater, and TRUSST Lingerie and directed her debut fashion show, “Styled By Example.” Cat completed editorial work as a model and was a production assistant for a frequent non-profit collaborator, Style 412. Cat currently serves as the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh’s Creative Producer where her role is to build new creative professional and artistic networks both within the local, national and international arts community, and develop a strategic vision for multi-media, multi-disciplinary creative content. Additionally, Cat serves on the arts advisory committee for Pittsburgh International Airport.

Cathy Trostle-Olivar is a first generation Latina-American fashion designer based in Pittsburgh, PA. With a main focus on sustainability, Cathy’s designs aim to promote and advocate for slow fashion. Using materials like bamboo knit, dead stock fabric, and secondhand fabric or garments to up-cycle, she creates pieces that are an alternative to fast fashion. Cathy is inspired by nature and exploration, and has an affinity for flowers. Her work ranges from her everyday clothing line, Earth is Groovy, to The Sun God installation at the Phipps Conservatory’s 2023 Summer Flower Show inspired by Billy Porter.
