Lights ON Liberty

September 17 @ 9:00 pm

Step into the glow at Lights ON Liberty on Thursday, September 17, as the August Wilson African American Cultural Center and Rainbow Serpent unveil Give Light to the Whole Circumference, a new permanent public art lighting installation transforming AWAACC’s iconic exterior into an illuminated landmark in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Designed by Rainbow Serpent, the installation brings the Center’s distinctive sail-like architecture to life through programmable light, with artistic sequences inspired by August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.

Join us for Intermission from 6:00–9:00 p.m., then head to Nancy and Milton Washington Plaza for the official lighting ceremony immediately following. The installation marks the first phase of a larger effort to activate Liberty Avenue through public art and will continue to evolve with special lighting for the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, Juneteenth, Pride, Pittsburgh celebrations, private events and more.
