The August Wilson African American Cultural Center welcomes visitors to enjoy a night of art and poetry! Join us inside the Claude Worthington Benedum Gallery for a tour of our latest exhibition Memories & Inspiration: The Kerry and C. Betty Davis Collection of African American Art. The gallery talk and tour, led by Assistant Curator Kimberly Jacobs, will highlight the Davis’s passion for art, desire to preserve cultural memories though collecting, and inspire communities nationwide by touring this spectacular collection of art. Afterwards, join acclaimed lyricist and Senior Director of Programming Orlando Watson for poetry inside the gallery, where poets and writers of all ages are invited to share original literature directly inspired by the works on view in the exhibition, highlighting the interdisciplinary connection between visual art and poetry. Please email Kimberly at kjacobs@awaacc.org for more information.

About the Exhibition:

Comprising sixty-seven spectacular works of art, Memories & Inspiration: The Kerry and C. Betty Davis Collection of African American Art draws generously from the Davis Collection, a treasury of artworks located in a private home in Atlanta, Georgia, primarily by African American artists but also featuring some works from other parts of the African diaspora. This landmark collection was assembled by Kerry and C. Betty Davis, an ordinary working-class couple who happily sacrificed material goods and comforts in order to surround themselves with the drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures they loved. Guided by a passion for collecting and by their extensive knowledge of art, as well as a desire to preserve cultural memories. On view June 16 – September 1, 2023.
