Royal Conservatoire of Scotland: Exchange Talks & August Wilson African American Cultural Center Presents: “What do you do with your legacy, and how do you best put it to use?”
6pm BST / 1pm EST
In partnership with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Glasgow Life, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center’s virtual program LIT FRIDAY presents Lit Friday x Exchange Talks with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to celebrate Black History Month in Glasgow. Scotland’s Black History Month began more than twenty years ago in response to the ever growing diversity of peoples of African ancestry living in the region, as well as to celebrate the long history of Afro-Scottish contributions. Scotland’s Black History Month acknowledges and seeks to illuminate the clear parallels between the US Black community’s context and their own, but also creates space to explore the particularities of the UK’s context.
In this collaboration between RCS’s Exchange Talks and Lit Friday, we will engage in a performance featuring Wali Jamal and conversation about the connections between the Sister Cities of Pittsburgh and Scotland through the brilliant life and work of August Wilson. Our talks will feature actor Wali Jamal, Dr. Laurence Glasco of the University of Pittsburgh and Naomi Shoba of Glasgow Life, moderated by August Wilson African American Cultural Center Literary Curator Jessica Lanay.
Special guests:
Dr. Laurence Glasco of the Department of History of University of Pittsburgh
Actor Wali Jamal
Naomi Shoba, Senior Arts & Music Diversity Manager
