Join us an evening of connection and exploration led by two of Pittsburgh’s most dynamic multidisciplinary creatives in celebration of our exhibition Determined to Be: The Sculpture of John Rhoden.

Complimentary light bites/refreshments will be provided from 6-6:30PM.

Marcè Nixon-Washington is a ceramic artist based in Pittsburgh, PA. Marcè investigates ceramics as an archival material to ‘permatize’ personal and cultural history. Marcè will guide attendees through a make and take workshop inspired by John Rhoden’s “Determined to Be”.

Later, join artist Petra Floyd as she sculpts a sound space in response to John Rhoden’s sculptures and travels. Kalimbrrd Sonic Tour is a one-hour gallery experience marking each decade of John Rhoden’s 60-year career. Kalimbrrd is a an ongoing, multisite, and participatory sound sculpture, in which visitors are invited to play amplified toys and makeshift instruments to sonically reshape art galleries.

Petra Floyd is a Liberian-American post-disciplinary artist and designer based in Pittsburgh, who embraces a playful and improvisational approach to art and design, often collaborating with others and using readily available materials. Their work is informed by their upbringing in a working-class immigrant family in Philadelphia, and they are committed to creating art that is both socially engaged and accessible.

They have ongoing projects, including Seeds and Sounds, which explores the intersection of sound art and agriculture by growing hardshell gourds to craft into musical instruments; and Audio.belisk, a collaborative sonification of the public sculpture Five Factors by Pittsburgh artist Peter Calaboyias.

Petra teaches at Carnegie Mellon University, where they earned their MFA in 2022. They have been recognized for their work with awards from The Heinz Endowment and The Pittsburgh Foundation, and they are a member of Monmade’s Green Leap and Pittsburgh Creative Corps.
