Johnson Jr. arrived in 1977 to pursue his doctorate in ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh, he found himself living with a true Pittsburgh Jazz legend. Dr. J and his wife Pamela opened their Homewood home to Master drummer Kenny Clarke while he was taking Nathan Davis’ place teaching at Pitt.
