Greetings is a multimedia exhibition that traces the history and meaning of the dap handshake, an everyday gesture born among Black G.I.s in Vietnam as a symbol of Dignity And Pride. The story begins at Long Binh Jail, a U.S. military prison outside Saigon and the site of the largest riot in U.S. military history, where the dap took root as a coded sign of solidarity.
Over decades, including years when the military banned the gesture outright, the dap evolved into a universal greeting of respect, connection, and identity across the United States and beyond, growing from a survival mechanism among soldiers into a mainstream cultural symbol.
This exhibition pairs a photo series exploring how the dap is passed down through generations with a scripted, fictional short film pilot following five friends who uncover hidden truths behind a haunting family history.
Artist Bio
Jibril Washington (b. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1997) is a film director, creative director, entrepreneur, and strategist whose work sits at the intersection of cultural anthropology, free thought, and community. Raised between Pittsburgh and New York, he draws on marketing and storytelling, sports and fitness, music and spirituality, and history and technology as inspiration, and continues to bridge those interests through his life’s work.
Washington’s background includes roles with the NBA/WNBA, NBC Universal, the WQED Filmmakers Academy, and The Andy Warhol Museum’s Pop District. Believing that “teams win championships,” he assembles creative teams to bring each vision to life.
