On May 21st, The August Wilson African American Cultural Center welcomed community leaders, creatives, entrepreneurs, and professionals for the latest edition of Intermission: An Artful Networking Series, a signature gathering where art, culture, and connection converge. Held in Downtown Pittsburgh, the event celebrated five distinguished Community Heroes whose leadership, service, and dedication continue to create meaningful impact throughout the region.
During the evening, Esther Bush, Khamil Bailey, Kahlil Darden, Sameera Philyaw-Burton, and Edgar Jackson Jr. were presented with Community Hero Awards in recognition of their contributions to the Pittsburgh community. Representing a diverse range of industries, organizations, and civic initiatives, the honorees exemplify the leadership, innovation, and commitment that help strengthen the social and cultural fabric of our city.
Guests explored AWAACC’s galleries, engaged in meaningful conversation, and connected with fellow changemakers in an atmosphere designed to encourage collaboration and community building. Throughout the evening, DJKB provided a dynamic soundtrack that kept the energy high, helping transform the Center into a vibrant gathering place for Pittsburgh’s creative and professional communities.
More than a networking event, Intermission continues to serve as a platform for celebrating local leadership and fostering authentic connections across sectors. By recognizing individuals whose work advances opportunity, equity, and community engagement, the series highlights the power of culture to convene, inspire, and strengthen Pittsburgh. As attendees gathered to exchange ideas, build relationships, and honor the accomplishments of this year’s Community Heroes, the evening reflected the spirit of collaboration and collective impact that defines both Intermission and the August Wilson African American Cultural Center.
