Janis Burley, President & CEO/Artistic Director of the August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC), recently joined America’s Black Forum to highlight how AWAACC continues to honor August Wilson’s legacy while advancing Black arts, culture, and education in Pittsburgh and beyond.

In the segment, Burley discussed AWAACC’s mission to serve as a cultural hub for art, storytelling, and community exchange rooted in the African American experience and the African diaspora. She shared how the Center preserves Wilson’s heritage through immersive exhibitions like The Writer’s Landscape, public programs such as the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival and the Black Bottom Film Festival, and free gallery access for all visitors.

Burley also discussed new initiatives, including the 10th Grade Arts Ambassador Program with Westinghouse Academy, The Barack Obama Academy of International Studies, and University Preparatory School. The program provides students with curated cultural experiences, curriculum-based learning, and official recognition as Arts Ambassadors—cultivating future leaders and creative thinkers. She also highlighted the Fuel the Future fundraising campaign, a $1.5 million effort ensuring that AWAACC remains a beacon for creativity, education, and community impact.

America’s Black Forum (ABF) is a weekly nationally-syndicated lifestyle magazine television series dedicated to highlighting the best in Black America. The program frames compelling stories across culture, health & wellness, entrepreneurship, change-makers, and community leadership.
