On May 2, 2025, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) hosted the in-person Youth Writers’ Camp Showcase, marking the culmination of a four-week virtual camp where middle and high school students explored poetry, plays, short stories, and songwriting. The program emphasized social justice themes and connected directly to playwright August Wilson’s legacy—reflecting the Center’s mission to advance African American storytelling and literary expression.

Led by teaching artists Carla Rae Knight and Dionna Westry Spencer, the camp encouraged campers to push creative boundaries, deepen writing skills, and culminate their work in a live performance and reception at AWAACC. During the Showcase, students performed original pieces created during the virtual sessions, engaged with peers, and celebrated their growth in front of family, mentors, and community supporters.

This spotlight event underscores AWAACC’s dedication to youth arts education, creativity, and platforming young voices across Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. By centering writing, expression, and community dialogue, the program expands access and cultivates future leaders in the arts.

Thank you to all participants, families, and supporters who joined this evening of inspiration, connection, and creative achievement. AWAACC looks forward to continuing to nurture young talent and support the next generation of writers, thinkers, and storytellers.
